The association is open to all students who are majoring or have an interest in the professional areas of health, physical education, recreation, dance, sports, athletics, athletic training and sport management.

2009 Robert Hampton Scholarship Award Recipients
Kristen Mabry
Kristen Mabry is a rising senior who is currently attending Lander University majoring in the Physical Education Teacher Education program. She has consistently exemplified the characteristics of a conscientious student and leader on her campus. She has been very active as a student at Lander, serving as an officer in the major’s club; leading the Lander Superstars team, serving as a lifeguard and participating in the Campus Crusade organization at Lander; and helping to organize a number of different campus service projects. Her professors describe her as having a strong sense of responsibility and leadership ability in both her academic and professional pursuits. Kristen is someone who has always been willing to give of her time, talents and energy to assist others. She sets the highest possible standard for her peers to emulate. Kristen’s immediate professional goal is to teach physical education and to coach volleyball and/or softball. Ultimately she plans to pursue graduate degrees in either exercise science or physical education and to have a positive impact on the HPERD profession in South Carolina. She is certainly a highly deserving future professional and it is with great pleasure that SCAHPERD extend to Kristen, the 2009 Robert Hampton Scholarship Award.
Kelly Saurman
Kelly Saurman is a senior majoring in Physical Education at the University of South Carolina. She is an active member of the PE majors club, a member of USA Swimming, US Lacrosse, and is certified as a NASPE coach. She is a conscientious student who has been on the SEC Academic Honor Roll for the past three years and on the College of Education Dean’s List for the past two years. In addition to the many long hours of training required for competitive swimming, Kelly has given her time to work with special needs students in the Aquatic Life Skills Program and she has worked with preschool students teaching dance and gymnastics. Her professors and coaches have used many adjectives to describe Kelly including dedicated, hardworking, resilient, industrious, and courageous. Kelly’s professional goals are to teach physical education and to manage a program that is valid, reliable, and accountable. She is a highly deserving future professional and it is with great pleasure that SCAHPERD extend to Kelly, the 2009 Robert Hampton Scholarship Award.
